What are Sintered Bronze Bushing?
Oil-impregnated bronze bushings are self-lubricating bushings produced through the powder metallurgy process. The bronze powder is compacted to prepare a porous part and by way of sintering of the Bronze particles are connected which causes high porosity. These pores are then filled with a lubricating liquid by vacuum, resulting in a reserve that continuously lubricates when in use.
When in use, the rotation of the shaft and the heat generate oil to draw in towards the bearing surface of the bush, forming a stable lubricant film that allows for motion support with very low friction and minimal wear while having no external lubrication. Once the system shuts down, the oil naturally reabsorbs into the pore network. Offering maintenance-free operation, high load-carrying capacity, and exceptional durability, oil-impregnated bronze bushings are utilized in electric motors, power tools, small engines, pumps, and general industrial machinery
How are Oil Impregnated Bronze Bushings Made?
Oil-impregnated bronze bushings are manufactured through a controlled powder metallurgy process. Copper and tin alloy powder is blended with a small amount of binders to improve flowability and green strength. Them, the blended powders are compacted in a precision steel die under 200 to 600 MPa to form a green bushing with basic shape retention but limited mechanical strength.
After compaction, the unfinished bushings are sintered in a continuous furnace at 750 to 900°C in a protective atmosphere. During sintering, the bronze particles bond through solid-state diffusion while maintaining an interconnected pore structure of about 9 to 27 percent. A sizing process can be added when tighter dimensional accuracy is needed, typically reaching IT5 to IT7 levels.
The final stage is oil impregnation process. The sintered bushings are placed under vacuum and then immersed in lubricating oil so the pores are fully saturated. This fills approximately 9 to 27 percent of their volume with oil. The stored oil gradually moves to the bearing surface during operation, providing continuous self-lubrication, low friction, and a long service life.
BLUE's Sintered Bronze Bushing Advantages
BLUE is ISO 9001:2015 certified and the sintered bronze bearings produced are subject to strict quality control.
Our self-lubricating bronze bearings feature controllable porosity, high oil content, and excellent lubrication performance.
BLUE sintered bronze bearings have a service life of up to 50,000 hours.
We can not only manufacture sintered bronze bearings, but also sintered iron bearings and sintered iron-bronze bearings.
Tight Tolerances
As we all know, oil impregnated bronze bushings must have tight radial tolerance.
The clearance between the inner diameter and the shaft needs to be quite accurate, and the outer diameter needs to fit accurately into the bearing housing.
BLUE sintered bronze bushings can reach tolerance within ±0.01mm after sizing process.
Sizing also has the benefit of surface sealing of the oil-impregnated bronze bushings.
Standard Sintered Bronze Bushing
BLUE offer a multitude of oil impregnated bronze bushings, including sintered iron bushings, sintered bronze bushings, and sintered iron & copper bushings.
All of these standard oil impregnated bronze bushings are in stock and available for direct purchase.
Our sintered bronze sleeve bushings come in a range of sizes, with inner diameters from 3mm to 60mm, outer diameters from 5mm to 70mm, and lengths from 3mm to 65mm.

How are Sintered Bushings lubricated?
Oil impregnated bronze bushings release lubricating oil from their pores during operation, driven by the suction effect of shaft rotation and increased friction temperature, forming an oil film that reduces friction.
When the machine stops, capillary forces draw the lubricating oil back into the pores of the sintered bushing.
However, during low-speed operation, insufficient hydraulic pressure can cause direct contact between the bearing and the shaft. This results in increased friction, wear, and a rise in temperature, potentially leading to lubricating oil loss.
Benefits of Oil Impregnted Bronze Bushings
- Reduced Noise
Compared to conventional bearing, oil-impregnated bronze bushing releases lubricating oil during operation, reducing friction and ensuring quieter performance.
- Excellent Corrosion Resistance
Sintered bronze bushing offers excellent corrosion resistance due to the natural properties of bronze and the protective effect of the lubricating oil, which helps prevent rust.
- Long Service Life
Oil-impregnated bronze bearings are protected by lubricating oil during operation, resulting in low friction, minimal wear, extended service life, and reduced maintenance costs.
Applications of Oil Impregnated Bushings
Sintered bronze bushings offer excellent self-lubrication, corrosion resistance, long service life, and low noise, making them ideal for use across various fields:
Household Appliances: electric fans, air conditioners, juicers, coffee machines
Automobiles: engines, transmissions, steering gears, brake systems
Power Tools: electric scissors, electric saws, electric drills
Industrial Equipment: agricultural machinery, textile machinery, conveyors, forestry machinery

FAQ's
Here are some of the questions we get asked often. If yours isn’t answered, don’t hesitate to contact us, we’re happy to help!
As we know, sintered bronze bushings contain numerous internal pores, which makes them suitable for oil impregnation.
Typically, the sintered bushings are placed in a mesh basket and submerged in an oil tank. A vacuum is then applied to remove air from the pores, allowing the oil to fill them.
Afterward, air is reintroduced to create atmospheric pressure, further pushing the oil into the bushing’s pores.
