What Is an Oil Pump Rotor?
An oil pump rotor is important rotating part of a trochoid or gerotor oil pump, widely used in automotive engines. It consists of an inner and outer rotor that form variable chambers to draw oil from the sump and send it under pressure to engine components, providing lubrication, cooling, and dependable operation.
Driven by the crankshaft through a transmission mechanism, the two parts rotate in sync, forming a series of enclosed chambers. On the intake side, as the chambers expand, a vacuum is created — drawing oil into the pump. As rotation continues, these chambers move to the outlet side, decrease in volume, and force the oil out under pressure.
Crucial to this process is the precision fit between the inner and outer rotor. To ensure consistent flow and reduce leakage, the radial clearance is kept tight — typically between 0.08 mm and 0.13 mm during assembly.

Oil Pump Rotor Production via Powder Metallurgy
The typical process of manufacturing oil pump rotors by powder metallurgy includes powder mixing, compaction, sintering, and secondary operations.

Mixing
Metal powder (usually an iron-based alloy) is first mixed with a binder such as zinc stearate or lithium stearate. These binders help the powder flow, enhance compressibility, and reduce the force required to eject the compacted part from the die.
Common oil pump rotor materials include: FC–0208–60, FN-0208-30, and FL-4205-45.

Compacting
The blended metal powder is compacted in a precision die at 400–800 MPa to form the green compact of the oil pump rotor. This compaction process defines the rotor’s basic geometry, including key profiles and dimensions.
Although compaction increases bulk density and forms the part, the green compact has low strength and remains fragile at this stage.

Sinteirng
The green compact is sintered in a controlled atmosphere at a temperature below the metal’s melting point.
For iron-based materials, the typical sintering temperature is 1120°C. During sintering, solid-state diffusion takes place, which bonds the metal particles together and improves the part’s density, strength, and structural integrity.

Secondary Operations
After sintering, oil pump rotors undergo secondary operations to achieve the required precision. Machining processes such as hard turning and grinding adjust the outer diameter and end face of the outer rotor and improve the flatness of the inner rotor.
Sizing process refines the cycloidal inner profile, the outer profile of the inner rotor, and the involute spline, ensuring dimensional accuracy.
